Entry#5 The Good, The Bad and the Mayhem

Allstate Insurance has gained a high reputation for its creative forms of TV marketing. All of their advertisements consist of a single person (Mr. Mayhem). which takes the form of multiple entities, from being a cat to being a basketball net to being a burglar. Mr. Mayhem is the embodiment of anything and everything that can affect your auto, home, life, and retirement insurance and presents it in a creative way to the viewer in the form of a TV advertisement. I'll be talking about the effectiveness of the Mayhem: The Social Media-Savvy Burglar , which is my favorite one.

Thanks to social media, the ad begins with Mr. Mayhem seeing a couple that are out of town. A handy tool for burglars to use. American culture is no longer American culture; it is now social media culture. Social media has been designed to promote every inch of your life. Everything from what you eat to where you work, and even, in some cases, what area you live in. Allstate has targeted these people to show the dangers of sharing every aspect of your life. They are telling you that you should not do this and be more private. Don't post about your personal life online; otherwise, a burglar can easily look you up and get your address online. I've done this with my address and it does work. Not only does this ad show Mr. Mayhem stealing the couples' belongings, but also damaging the house. Allstate makes sure by showing Mr. Mayhem finding the keys but not using them, breaking a window on the way in and on the way out. which I find amusing. Allstate does a good job of taking something serious and making it entertaining. Hence the glass breaking in and out, even though the door is wide open towards the end of the ad.

This ad is organized like a domino effect. The couple post pictures of them out of town. The burglar sees and looks up information about the couple, goes to their home, causes property damage by breaking window, steals the couple's belongings, and breaks another window. All throughout this ad, Mr. Mayhem is explaining the dangers of sharing sensitive information online. The purpose of this ad is to promote home owner's insurance, to show that if you are not protected by these events, then you are out of luck. By not having homeowners insurance, you are susceptible to property damage, which you will have to pay out of your own money.

Allstate makes it a point at the end of each ad to have Mr. Mayhem say, "Get allstate where agents keep you protected from mayhem, like me." If you don't have insurance, then there is nothing Allstate or any insurance company can do for you. It will cost you so much more money to replace your belongings and whatever damage your home has sustained. So it's smart to have your back covered when it comes to insurance because you never know when Mr. Mayhem will show up to your home and cause some mayhem.

  1. Definitely agree getting home insurance is a smart idea. There's no knowing what disaster homes could come across in the furure. On the other hand unfortunately social media has taken over and it definetly has a huge influence in America.
